Employee Wellbeing Revolution: A New Path to Productivity

In recent years, there's been a remarkable shift in the corporate landscape—more and more businesses are redirecting their attention and financial resources towards a focus on their employees' well-being. The value employees place on workplace wellbeing has notably surged in the post-pandemic era; therefore, it's not surprising that employers are taking steps to ensure every member of their team feels secure and cared for.

In the midst of intense competition, a candidate shortage, and the influential wave of the Great Resignation, you might wonder whether investing in employee wellbeing is a worthwhile endeavour. However, it's time to recognise that employee well-being isn't just a matter of social responsibility; it's a dynamic force that propels businesses forward.

A robust commitment to employee wellbeing creates a win-win situation. Employees experience the tangible benefits of well-rounded support, both at work and in their personal lives. This cultivates a healthy work-life balance, allowing them to reach their full potential while meeting their responsibilities.

Startlingly, the Mental Health Foundation has revealed that 40% of employees feel they often neglect essential aspects of their lives due to work. This challenge looms large in an era where we're more interconnected than ever, making it all too easy to dive into work-related emails beyond the confines of regular working hours.

As we stride into 2024, one thing is abundantly clear: flexibility reigns supreme. The pandemic has unequivocally proven that widespread remote work is not only possible but often highly efficient. This newfound flexibility provides a cost-effective means to demonstrate your unwavering commitment to employee wellbeing, showcasing your readiness to adapt to evolving needs.

But here's the most compelling part: my clients consistently affirm that investing in workplace well-being isn't a one-sided affair. It doesn't just benefit their employees; it profoundly transforms the very fabric of their businesses.

Energised, content, and engaged employees, enjoying a healthy work-life balance, are undeniably more motivated and productive. Research from Gallup has confirmed that enhanced employee well-being correlates with increased levels of engagement. The result? A direct, positive impact on your bottom line.

In the short term, employee well-being is a potent antidote to absenteeism. On an individual level, a culture of care significantly bolsters employee retention, enabling you to keep your top talent where they belong. As your business scales, you'll notice the ripple effect on talent acquisition. Data from Mind suggests that employees are a staggering 60% more likely to enthusiastically recommend their employer when well-being initiatives are firmly in place.

Creating a wholesome workplace starts with your organisational culture and work practices. The more adaptable and flexible your approach, the happier and more confident your employees will be.

Earlier this year, Madeleine attended a LinkedIn event called ‘Future Ready’ that focused on AI and how it can drive business development in the recruitment industry. Poor Mads had been joking for ages that one day her job would be overtaken by ChatGPT, so it was good to see her looking relieved the next day! 😂 As much as we use AI regularly to speed up certain tasks and save time, the human element is still very much needed to get decent results. For Chat GPT (or any AI software) to be of any real use, the processes behind it need to be solid, consistent and applied properly. You wouldn’t hire an admin assistant without giving them some training and we think of AI in the same way. If you wanted to use it to write a job spec, for example, you’d need to use a prompt that specifies the correct tone of voice, then check the text for inaccuracies, dodgy spelling and any missing information. AI is never going to replace our team’s decision-making, intuition or judge of character, so they don’t need to worry about being replaced! But what it does do is improve productivity so we can spend more time interacting with people and doing what we’re good at.

How many times have you felt like you’re surrounded by idiots? There might be a very good reason for this (unless they are certified idiots, then you’re screwed!). 🥴 At Harte, we frequently refer to Persona Profiling, which uses four colours (red, blue, yellow and green) to identify individual traits so we can develop a better understanding of ourselves and others. From a recruitment point of view, this helps to define a job seeker’s characteristics and assess whether they’d be suited to a role or fit in with a business’s culture. Someone who is a ‘fiery red’ for example, will be results-orientated, strong-willed, and driven to achieve, whereas a ‘cool blue’ personality will have a more conventional energy that thrives on analysis and asking questions before making a move. Knowing this sort of information makes finding the right ‘fit’ for a company a whole lot easier because we have a clear idea of the traits and behaviours that are aligned with the role. It also gives us an indication of when we need to take a step back and slow things down in interviews to really get to know the job-seeker properly. If you’re keen to find out more about the four personality types, have a read of (or listen to) this book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Surrounded-Idiots-Behavior-Effectively-Communicate/dp/1250179947 Do you know what energy colour you lead by?
