International Women's Day 2025

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day, which for me, isn’t about a battle of the sexes, or point scoring between genders. It’s about acknowledging the women I know who are bloody amazing and shape my life both inside and outside the office. 💗

It was all girls in my house growing up (Dad’s t-shirt says it all! 🤣) and having three sisters was and is, chaotic and brilliant. As well as going on loads of adventures together, we provide each other with a solid support system, which is crucial for a basic level of sanity! 👭👫

The theme behind this year’s International Women’s Day is #AccelerateAction, and the barriers that women face, in a personal and professional capacity. According to the World Economic Forum, it will be 2158 before full gender equality is reached. And that is not good enough because it’s something we (and our kids) won’t get to see. 😢 😡

If you want to #AccelerateAction and celebrate women’s success (and why wouldn’t you?), here are a few things you can do:

🤎 Promote the creative and artistic talent of women and girls.

🤎 Support women and girls into leadership, decision-making, business and STEM-based disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

🤎 Recruit, retain and develop diverse talent within the work place.

🤎 Call out stereotypes, discrimination and the biased opinions of those who should know better.

When hiring, remember it’s a two-way street. You’re not just choosing the right candidate. They’re choosing the right company. Make sure your job posts, interviews, and brand clearly show: ✨ What makes your business great ✨ Why people want to work with you ✨ The value and culture you offer Top talent looks for more than just a pay check — they look for purpose.

The ‘Right to Switch Off’ is one of the commitments introduced under The Employment Rights Bill by the Labour government. Its purpose is to ensure employees have the right to disconnect from work related comms such as phone calls and emails outside of their working hours without facing any negative consequences. Lockdown was a catalyst for flexible working, but the lines are now very much blurred between work and homelife, which is a short cut to a knackered and frazzled team. The Employment Bill changes aren’t expected to kick in until next year, but if you’re an employer, it’s worth considering how they will impact the running of your business. Start to think about what is classed as ‘essential communication’ and how it could change the way you manage your team. The last thing you want is to be known as a company who doesn’t prioritise the well-being of their employees, so make sure new policies aren’t put on the backburner for too long. Boundaries need to be in place to make sure everyone has a positive work-life balance and the ‘Right to Switch Off’ is what it says on the tin.
