Own It: Taking Charge of Your Career in Property Management

Ready to take charge of your career in property management? The key to success lies in owning your journey, setting clear goals, and consistently taking proactive steps. Here’s how to seize control and thrive in this dynamic field.

Set Clear Career Goals

Start by defining what success looks like for you. Do you aspire to manage a large portfolio of properties, specialise in commercial property, or perhaps start your own property management firm? Setting clear, achievable goals provides direction and motivates you to move forward.

Build a Strong Foundation

A solid educational background in property management or business can provide a strong foundation. Pursue relevant qualifications such as a degree or certification courses through professional bodies, like
Propertymark. Continual professional development will keep your knowledge up-to-date and enhance your credibility.

Gain Practical Experience

Experience is invaluable in property management. Seek internships, entry-level positions, or volunteer opportunities to gain hands-on experience. Working in different aspects of property management helps you understand the industry comprehensively and build a diverse skill set.

Develop Essential Skills

Property management requires a blend of technical and soft skills. Focus on developing key skills such as communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and financial management. These skills will enable you to manage properties effectively and handle a variety of challenges.

Network Actively

Like most of life, networking is crucial in the property management industry. Attend industry events, join professional organisations, and connect with peers and mentors. Building a strong professional network can open doors to new opportunities and provide valuable insights and support. Social media, like LinkedIn, is invaluable for this.

Stay Informed

The property market is constantly evolving. Stay informed about market trends, regulatory changes, and new technologies. Subscribe to industry publications, follow thought leaders, and participate in continuing education. Being knowledgeable ensures you remain competitive and can offer the best service to clients.

Embrace Technology

Technology plays a significant role in modern property management. Familiarise yourself with property management software, digital marketing tools, and other technological advancements. Leveraging technology can streamline your work processes and enhance efficiency.

Seek Mentorship

Finding a mentor can accelerate your career growth. A mentor can provide guidance, share experiences, and offer advice on navigating the industry. Look for someone whose career path you admire and who is willing to invest in your development.

Take Initiative

Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you – create them. Take initiative by volunteering for new projects, seeking additional responsibilities, and proposing innovative solutions. Being proactive demonstrates your commitment and can lead to career advancement.

Reflect and Adapt

Regularly reflect on your career progress and be willing to adapt. Evaluate what’s working, identify areas for improvement, and be open to change. Adaptability is key to navigating the dynamic property management landscape and ensuring long-term success.

Communicate Effectively

Strong communication skills are essential in property management. Whether it’s with tenants, landlords, contractors, or colleagues, clear and effective communication helps build trust and resolve issues efficiently. Make sure you’re always professional and approachable.

Maintain a Positive Attitude

A positive attitude can set you apart in the property management field. Challenges are inevitable, but approaching them with optimism and resilience can make a significant difference. Positivity is contagious and can inspire those around you, fostering a productive work environment.

Owning your career in property management means taking charge of your professional journey with confidence and determination. By setting clear goals, continuously improving your skills, and staying proactive, you can achieve success and fulfilment in this dynamic industry.

Earlier this year, Madeleine attended a LinkedIn event called ‘Future Ready’ that focused on AI and how it can drive business development in the recruitment industry. Poor Mads had been joking for ages that one day her job would be overtaken by ChatGPT, so it was good to see her looking relieved the next day! 😂 As much as we use AI regularly to speed up certain tasks and save time, the human element is still very much needed to get decent results. For Chat GPT (or any AI software) to be of any real use, the processes behind it need to be solid, consistent and applied properly. You wouldn’t hire an admin assistant without giving them some training and we think of AI in the same way. If you wanted to use it to write a job spec, for example, you’d need to use a prompt that specifies the correct tone of voice, then check the text for inaccuracies, dodgy spelling and any missing information. AI is never going to replace our team’s decision-making, intuition or judge of character, so they don’t need to worry about being replaced! But what it does do is improve productivity so we can spend more time interacting with people and doing what we’re good at.

How many times have you felt like you’re surrounded by idiots? There might be a very good reason for this (unless they are certified idiots, then you’re screwed!). 🥴 At Harte, we frequently refer to Persona Profiling, which uses four colours (red, blue, yellow and green) to identify individual traits so we can develop a better understanding of ourselves and others. From a recruitment point of view, this helps to define a job seeker’s characteristics and assess whether they’d be suited to a role or fit in with a business’s culture. Someone who is a ‘fiery red’ for example, will be results-orientated, strong-willed, and driven to achieve, whereas a ‘cool blue’ personality will have a more conventional energy that thrives on analysis and asking questions before making a move. Knowing this sort of information makes finding the right ‘fit’ for a company a whole lot easier because we have a clear idea of the traits and behaviours that are aligned with the role. It also gives us an indication of when we need to take a step back and slow things down in interviews to really get to know the job-seeker properly. If you’re keen to find out more about the four personality types, have a read of (or listen to) this book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Surrounded-Idiots-Behavior-Effectively-Communicate/dp/1250179947 Do you know what energy colour you lead by?
