Why Neurodiversity in the workplace benefits everyone

Companies are always on the lookout for that special something to give them an edge. Guess what? The answer might just be in the diverse talents of neurodivergent team members! Yep, you read that right. Neurodiversity covers a whole range of unique brain wiring, like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia but, here's the twist: these people aren't just great to have around – they can be the secret sauce your company needs to thrive.

Think about it: neurodivergent individuals often bring some seriously cool skills to the table. Autistic employees, for example, are like information-processing wizards, spotting important details lightning-fast. And those with ADHD? They're the creative dynamos, always thinking outside the box and juggling tasks like pros. Meanwhile, folks with dyslexia? They're the connection kings and queens, making complex stuff seem like a piece of cake.

But it's not just about skills – it's about results too. A report by Deloitte revealed that  “research suggests that teams with neurodivergent professionals in some roles can be 30% more productive than those without them.” Other studies have shown that neurodiverse teams can outshine the rest, making fewer mistakes and getting stuff done faster. Plus, their different perspectives can lead to super innovative solutions that give companies a real boost.

From a business perspective, embracing neurodiversity is a no-brainer. Literally! As Deloitte found out, teams with neurodiverse members can be up to 30% more productive – now, that's something worth shouting about! And get this: they also tend to be more loyal to their employer so they stick around longer too, bringing stability and loyalty to the table.

But it's not just about numbers. Creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported boosts morale and sparks creativity. When people are encouraged to be themselves, magic happens.

It is particularly important for companies which are customer facing to reflect their client base. Clients are attracted to working with companies who can empathise with them. Estate agents, for example, can especially benefit from having a neurodiverse team. Selling a home is an emotive experience and the choice of an estate agent can often be an emotion driven one so having a diverse team increases the size of the client base to which an individual agency is attractive. A recent estimate is that 15 - 20% of the population is neurodiverse so what are you doing to positively reflect that in your team?

Of course, it's important to remember that every neurodivergent individual is unique. There's no one-size-fits-all here! So, forget about those old stereotypes and embrace the awesome diversity each person brings.

In today's job market, diversity isn't just a buzzword – it's a must-have. Companies that overlook the talents of neurodivergent individuals are missing out big time. Ignoring neurodiversity isn't just unfair – it's bad for business. With so many incredible neurodivergent minds out there, it's time for companies to open their doors wide and welcome them in with open arms. After all, who wouldn't want a slice of that diverse, dynamic talent pie?

Current Roles

How many times have you felt like you’re surrounded by idiots? There might be a very good reason for this (unless they are certified idiots, then you’re screwed!). 🥴 At Harte, we frequently refer to Persona Profiling, which uses four colours (red, blue, yellow and green) to identify individual traits so we can develop a better understanding of ourselves and others. From a recruitment point of view, this helps to define a job seeker’s characteristics and assess whether they’d be suited to a role or fit in with a business’s culture. Someone who is a ‘fiery red’ for example, will be results-orientated, strong-willed, and driven to achieve, whereas a ‘cool blue’ personality will have a more conventional energy that thrives on analysis and asking questions before making a move. Knowing this sort of information makes finding the right ‘fit’ for a company a whole lot easier because we have a clear idea of the traits and behaviours that are aligned with the role. It also gives us an indication of when we need to take a step back and slow things down in interviews to really get to know the job-seeker properly. If you’re keen to find out more about the four personality types, have a read of (or listen to) this book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Surrounded-Idiots-Behavior-Effectively-Communicate/dp/1250179947 Do you know what energy colour you lead by?
