Speed Dating for Jobs: Why You Have Only Two Weeks to Woo Top Talent!

Imagine recruiting is like speed dating – you have mere moments to make a lasting impression. In the fast-paced world of job hunting, you’ve got only two weeks to woo top talent. Why the rush? Because the best candidates are snapped up quicker than you can say "dream employee!" Let's dive into why a speedy hiring process is crucial and how to streamline it without losing your mind.

Why Only Two Weeks?

The best candidates are like gold dust. They’re highly skilled, in demand, and always on the radar of your competitors. If you take too long to make a decision, you risk losing them to a company that’s quicker on the draw. That’s without even considering counter-offers from their current employer, trying to lure them back. Research shows that the best candidates are off the market within 10 days. So, the clock is ticking!

Streamlining the Process

Get Your Ducks in a Row: Before you even post that job ad, make sure you know exactly what you’re looking for. Clear job descriptions and a well-defined hiring process will save you time and headaches down the line.

Pre-Screen Like a Pro: Use pre-screening tools to quickly weed out candidates who don’t meet your criteria. This way, you can focus your energy on the real contenders. These can be an initial screening call, a questionnaire or request an intro video or cover letter to accompany their CV.

Interview Smart, Not Hard: Instead of dragging candidates through multiple rounds of interviews, consolidate. Have all key stakeholders present in one comprehensive interview. It saves time and shows candidates that you value their time as much as yours. This last point will really make you stand out as many candidates complain, even at application/interview stages, about not feeling like their time or effort were appreciated.

Make Decisions Quickly: After the interview, don’t let things linger. Have a clear decision-making process in place so you can extend offers quickly. If you’re on the fence about a candidate, remember that hesitation could cost you a top performer.

Keeping Candidates Engaged

While you’re hustling through your process, don’t forget to keep candidates in the loop. Regular communication is key. Let them know where they stand, what the next steps are, and how long everything will take. This transparency not only keeps them engaged but also reflects well on your company culture.

The Benefits of Speedy Hiring

Attract Top Talent: A swift hiring process signals to candidates that your company is decisive and efficient – qualities that top talent finds attractive.

Reduce Costs: A shorter hiring process means less time spent by your HR team and lower overall recruitment costs.

Boost Morale: Filling vacancies quickly can help maintain team morale and productivity. The longer a position remains open, the more strain it puts on the rest of your team.

In today’s competitive job market, speed is your secret weapon. By streamlining your hiring process and making decisions swiftly, you can secure top talent before your competitors even know what hit them. So, channel your inner speed dater, get your process in order, and start wooing those dream employees like the recruitment rockstar you are!

Earlier this year, Madeleine attended a LinkedIn event called ‘Future Ready’ that focused on AI and how it can drive business development in the recruitment industry. Poor Mads had been joking for ages that one day her job would be overtaken by ChatGPT, so it was good to see her looking relieved the next day! 😂 As much as we use AI regularly to speed up certain tasks and save time, the human element is still very much needed to get decent results. For Chat GPT (or any AI software) to be of any real use, the processes behind it need to be solid, consistent and applied properly. You wouldn’t hire an admin assistant without giving them some training and we think of AI in the same way. If you wanted to use it to write a job spec, for example, you’d need to use a prompt that specifies the correct tone of voice, then check the text for inaccuracies, dodgy spelling and any missing information. AI is never going to replace our team’s decision-making, intuition or judge of character, so they don’t need to worry about being replaced! But what it does do is improve productivity so we can spend more time interacting with people and doing what we’re good at.

How many times have you felt like you’re surrounded by idiots? There might be a very good reason for this (unless they are certified idiots, then you’re screwed!). 🥴 At Harte, we frequently refer to Persona Profiling, which uses four colours (red, blue, yellow and green) to identify individual traits so we can develop a better understanding of ourselves and others. From a recruitment point of view, this helps to define a job seeker’s characteristics and assess whether they’d be suited to a role or fit in with a business’s culture. Someone who is a ‘fiery red’ for example, will be results-orientated, strong-willed, and driven to achieve, whereas a ‘cool blue’ personality will have a more conventional energy that thrives on analysis and asking questions before making a move. Knowing this sort of information makes finding the right ‘fit’ for a company a whole lot easier because we have a clear idea of the traits and behaviours that are aligned with the role. It also gives us an indication of when we need to take a step back and slow things down in interviews to really get to know the job-seeker properly. If you’re keen to find out more about the four personality types, have a read of (or listen to) this book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Surrounded-Idiots-Behavior-Effectively-Communicate/dp/1250179947 Do you know what energy colour you lead by?
